Updated on the 5th and 20 th of every month, we at www.mattersofart.com endeavor to keep you in touch with today’s fast-moving world of contemporary Indian Art. In the wake of the much celebrated growth and recognition of ‘Contemporary Indian Art’, there has also been voices questioning these developments in terms of its effects on art making and art consuming practices. Celebrating the potential of a liberated ‘Contemporary Indian Art’, we also seek to serve as a platform for resistance articulated in terms of art making, critical reevaluation of art, reformulations of notions art and artistic practices, seeking to radicalize the definition of art.
Through our features, interviews with artists who have the potential to or already are important in shaping the history of, contemporary Indian art, especially trying to focus on new directions. We try to focus on art that seek to operate to operative from the edge or from the margins. However we fully understand the mainstream media’s need to engage with mainstream market practices, fully celebrating the potential of the mainstream, we try to negotiate the ephemeral space between the dynamics of the ‘emergent’, ‘dominant’, and the ‘residual’ forces within contemporary artistic practices.

www.mattersofart.com is India’s first ezine on art. It is the most authoritative and challenging contemporary art ezine whose prime aim is to “generate critical debates on art and aesthetics.” We seek to make an intervention in the realm of critical debates by providing a discursive platform, both for art making and critical commentaries on art. As an editorial intervention we also sometimes feature descriptive narratives of events happening in the margins just to be able to make the margin come into focus, constantly trying to push for critical heterogeneity.
The first issue of www.mattersofart.com carried an essay on The Great Indian Art Boom, analyzing the skyrocketing prices of art. Since then, www.mattersofart.com has come out with many controversial as well as extensively researched stories on the Indian art scene.
www.mattersofart.com is dedicated to covering the visual arts in context—aesthetic, intellectual, historical, political, legal, social, institutional, commercial and technological—in features, interviews, reviews, profiles, reports and polemics. It also reviews video art, performance art, books and films pertaining to art and artists. Its regular columns analyze the various factors that today influence the art world, from investment to legal matters.
Our Special Interviews section focuses on individuals who have been voices, that we felt that needs to be heard…just to open up newer avenues of thinking, or sometimes trying to get an understand the minds that have key institutional control, and attempting to make it transparent.
The in focus is an complementary opposite of Special Interviews, and through this we focus on and interrogate practices which have claims to be on the edge. Editorially this section is useful to problematise issues involving art and non-art, elite and popular, maybe sometimes by simply collaging hyperlinked intertextuality.
In addition to the extensive reviews section, covering exhibitions held in various kinds of spaces, transcending the category of major and minor, at the same time (pointedly) focusing on alternative spaces for display. www.matterofart.com is the only ezine, ‘rooted’ to India with regular features on new-age Art, Art investment and legal issues pertaining to Art, also giving space to present and articulate the processes of conceptualization and execution. There is also an interest on a broader framework called visual culture. Keeping the focus on the edge within high art practices, we also seek to offer space to writing that engages with contemporary visuality. We offer space to writers who are interested in engaging with contemporary art practices and hope to serve as a platform for some varied kind of writing on art, and contemporary visual culture.
